Northern California Mental Health Statistics

More Northern California teens than ever before are experiencing mental health symptoms. Mental Health America’s 2024 rankings show that 15 percent of California teens had a major depressive episode during the last year. Furthermore, one-third of teens in California report feeling sad or hopeless. In fact, the lack of mental health services in California earned the state a grade of D on the 2022 California Children’s Report Card, published by the Oakland-based advocacy organization Children Now.

Yet among the teens who experience major depression, fewer than one-third are able to access residential treatment in Northern California. MHA teen depression statistics from 2024 show that 70 percent of teens with depression in California aren’t getting the care they need, due in part to the lack of residential mental health treatment centers for teens in Northern California. As a result, families searching online for “teenage counseling near me,” “teen treatment in NorCal,” or “mental health facilities in Northern California” often find limited options and availability.

Comprehensive Care for Adolescents and Families at Our Northern California Teen Mental Health Treatment Centers

Newport Academy’s residential mental health treatment centers for teens in Northern California are helping to address the gap in mental healthcare in this region. We provide teens with integrated, evidence-based care while helping them to build supportive peer communities.

Our model of care addresses the underlying trauma that catalyzes teen anxiety, depression, substance abuse, disordered eating, and other mental health and co-occurring disorders. Each teen’s individualized treatment plan incorporates teenage therapy and counseling services, and parents participate in family therapy and parent support groups. Both young people and parents gain tools for better communication and enhanced family harmony.

Our licensed clinicians specialize in treating trauma and related issues through proven modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, EFT, and EMDR. Our clinicians use the Attachment-Based Family Therapy model to repair parent-child relationships, an essential component of sustainable recovery.

Newport Academy Paloma (now Arena): The BEST! It was a daunting task to find the right treatment program for our teenager, but choosing Newport Academy Paloma (now Arena) turned out to be the absolute best decision for us. Their therapist team is exceptional! They are not only caring, empathetic, and highly specialized, but also deeply devoted to their clients' well-being. Brad (Family Therapist), Olivia (Individual Therapist), Kayla (Behavior Counselor), Dr. Paul (Psychiatrist), and Rayjay (the incredibly cool and inspiring Residential Supervisor), along with all the dedicated CCs and support staff (apologies for not naming everyone), are all highly skilled professionals deeply committed to their clients' well-being. The genuine and compassionate dedication fostered a strong and trusted bond with our teenager, ultimately resulting in the best possible outcome for both our teenager and our family. We feel very lucky to meet not just one, but all these exceptional staff members. Newport Academy's administrative processes were also well-organized, with close communication and prompt responses to any inquiries or needs, from enrollment to discharge. I am also impressed by their commitment to ongoing care. During and after discharge, Newport Academy organizes various community engagements and support group sessions that are very helpful for us. While I could share more about our experiences, I understand that experiences can vary, especially for teenagers who are highly sensitive and dealing with complex issues. From our experience at Newport Academy Paloma, I believe that the most critical factor for a positive outcome is the motivation and commitment of the teenager. Newport Academy staff members have a unique blend of talent and sincerity that encouraged our teenager to open up and fully engage with the program. This journey has been profoundly impactful for our family, and we are immensely grateful for the support and transformation it has brought to us.

Our daughter spent one month at Newport Academy, and had a positive experience. She learned a lot, felt safe and respected. We had excellent communication from the staff. Overall, the program helped our family heal during a very challenging and hard chapter of our lives.

Having been to several locations to try to shake some of my more troubling tendencies and feelings, Newport was definitely my most positive experience. The staff were super chill and I felt I was able to open up to them with ease(which in my case was rare), and the living environment with my peers despite the Covid restrictions, was honestly an easy transition. The food provided was healthy and tasted good, and when we could eat was very reasonably spaced out and didn’t leave me very hungry at all. Also, during my stay there were 4 stray cats( Tiny, Rona, Scruff, and Bongo) who happened to show up at the house uninvited! Staff handled the cats scenario well and provided me with some great memories. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to stay at Newport and I greatly appreciate all the staff. Thanks - Ben C

I agree that ray jay is a horrible RS. My son repeatedly told me how annoying and arrogant this man was. He said that ray jay was disrespectful to the clients. He also mentioned how every other client at Paloma hates ray jay. He mentioned multiple times how ray jay was late and never on time. Ray Jay is incredibly hard to reach and does not respect the parents that are paying his bills. I suggest this man be fired or demoted. Please take this action into consideration.

The son was telling me how the staff was constantly making him uncomfortable and feel unwanted, I do not recommend such a place.
